THE former managing director of Golden Village, Mr Kenneth Tan, 43, has been appointed Chief Operating Officer by the Media Development Authority (MDA).
The chairman of the Singapore Film Society, who is an avid champion of local films, will also take over from outgoing Mr Man Shu Sum as Director of the Singapore Film Commission from May 2.
Announcing his appointment on Wednesday, MDA said during his time at Golden Village, Mr Tan provided several independent local feature productions with opportunities for commercial release at Golden Village cinemas.
Before that, Mr Tan was the Chief Executive Officer of MediaCorp Radio and Chief Operating Officer of MediaCorp TV.
He also chairs the Promote Mandarin Council and Advisory Committee of the School of Film and Media Studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. In addition, he sits on the boards of several academic and cultural institutions.
As COO, Mr Tan will oversee MDA's efforts in ensuring that it continues to provide its partners and clients with highly effective and efficient services that are geared towards operational excellence.
'His empathy for the local film-making sector coupled with his years of international business experience will help to grow our film-making talents,' said MDA.
MDA's CEO Dr Christopher Chia said: 'His arrival will help us accelerate the pace of our industry development and promotion efforts regionally and internationally, and help groom our creative talents to make a mark in our budding film-making industry.'
'His rich industry experience and strong business ties will improve the reach and relevance of Made-by-Singapore media content, products and services for local and international audiences and provide greater impetus to our drive to make Singapore the media gateway between Asia and the world.'
On his appointment, Mr Tan said: 'I am honoured and excited to become part of the MDA vision and team at this significant juncture of Singapore's development as a media hub.'
'I look forward to drawing upon my industry experience and passion to add as much value as I can to our concerted national effort to etch Singapore's place on the world media map even more deeply.'
