WHEN the world famous Shaolin martial arts meets the artistry of classical dance, you get the acclaimed dance pantomime 'A Tale of Shaolin'.
Hailed by critics as the 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' of stage productions, the dance is performed by the renowned Zhengzhou Song and Dance Theatre from Henan province, China.
It tells the story of two star-crossed lovers - Tian Yuan and Su Shui - who were separated when bandits invaded their town.
Su Shui was taken away by the bandits while Tian Yuan was rescued by an abbot from Shaolin. Tian became the abbot's disciple and later led a group of Shaolin monks to chase away the bandits and rescue his loved one.
The Shaolin monks, who will be demonstrating their amazing 'kungfu' skills in the show, are from the famed Shaolin Martial Arts Academy.
Since its debut in 2004, 'A Tale of Shaolin' has since toured several major cities in China, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan.
It will make its way to Singapore and the region for the first time this year.
The performance will run at the Esplanade Theatre from July 24 to 27.
It is brought in by the Singapore Press Holdings' flagship Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao, in celebration of its 85th anniversary.
Excerpts of the show will be available online at www.omy.sg/showbiz from April 18.
