Getting too crowded at American Club, members say

WITH some people offering their memberships on the open market, eager buyers are snapping up what's available.

This has led to tension between new and existing members in some clubs, who have different needs.

Over at the American Club, a member, who prefers to remain unnamed, complained that there is overcrowding, especially when families with children use club facilities.

The squeeze gets worse during the weekends, when "everyone packs places like the swimming pool", she said.

my paper also understands from some members that the club has been looking for alternative sites to ease the space constraint.

An e-mail was circulated last month informing members about the ongoing search, and how the housing mortgage crisis in the US and Singapore's volatile property market has made it difficult to find suitable locations.

However, not all American Club members are unhappy about the current situation.

Mr Vijay Ahuja, vice-chairman of integrated entertainment company Eros International and a new member of the club, does not think the place is cramped. Nonetheless, he was not in favour of the club relocating from its present Claymore Road site.

The British national bought his $120,000 membership on the open market at the start of 2008.

When contacted, the American Club declined to comment.
