The Straits Times

INDONESIA'S top military official, General Djoko Santoso, is on his introductory visit to Singapore from May 5-7, said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) in a statement on Tuesday.

As part of his visit, the Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Defence Forces called on Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean and Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Desmond Kuek.

Gen Santoso also called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on Tuesday morning.

Lt-Gen Kuek and Gen Santoso will also co-chairing the 11th Combined Annual Report Meeting between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) in Singapore on Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting oversees the full scope of TNI-SAF interactions, across all three Services.

The visit by Gen Santoso underscored the longstanding defence ties between Singapore and Indonesia, which span over 40 years.

The Singapore Army is currently hosting the Indonesian Army in Singapore for Exercise Chandrapura, an annual bilateral exercise between the SAF's Commandos and the TNI's Special Forces Command or Kopassus. Mindef said such exercises help to improve the interoperability and mutual understanding of our two armed forces.

Gen Santoso had previously received the Meritorious Service Medal (Military) in November 2005 when he was Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army, in recognition of his outstanding contributions towards enhancing the good relations between the Singapore Army and the Indonesian Army.
