SINGTEL users who surf on the go can look forward to faster speeds by March next year, when the telecom operator upgrades its network to offer downloads that are several times faster.

Currently, its cellphone-based 3.5G network offers 3.6Mbps for mobile users, but after a $220 milllion upgrade announced on Friday, this will be boosted to 14.4Mbps.

SingTel says the network, to be built by equipment vendor Ericsson, will also prepare it to offer even faster speeds - up to 42Mbps - in the coming years.

However, the telco is not the first to offer faster surfing on the go. MobileOne already said it will be readying speeds of 14.4Mbps by the end of this year.

With these speeds, a webpage will load several times faster, easing the online lag that many users of such 3.5G services have complained about.
