LAWYERS for Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew have described affidavits filed by Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan and two others in a defamation suit as 'irrelevant and scandalous'.
They were making the case on Thursday for the statements by Dr Chee, his sister Chee Siok Chin and former solicitor-general and opposition politician Francis Seow to be struck out.
SDP lawyer M. Ravi and the Chee siblings will argue their case before Justice Belinda Ang on Friday.
The Lees, represented by Senior Counsel Davinder Singh and Mr Adrian Tan of Drew and Napier, are seeking aggravated damages from the SDP and the Chee siblings for defaming them in articles in the SDP newsletter, The New Democrat, two years ago.
The pieces touched on the National Kidney Foundation saga and drew parallels between how the charity and the Government were run.
The hearing to assess damages is slated to be heard from next Monday, with both PM Lee and MM Lee expected to take the stand.
