Man admits causing two brothers' death
Tue, May 27, 2008
The Straits Times

A 30-YEAR-OLD motorist pleaded guilty on Tuesday to causing the death of two teenage brothers in a traffic accident along Changi Village Road 5 1/2 years ago.

Dilveer Singh Gill admitted to driving a rented car at almost twice the speed limit at 90 kmh along the 50 kmh-limit road on Dec 2, 2002.

As a result, the car veered left and ran off the road before slamming into a tree, causing the deaths of Pardip Singh, 14, and his brother, Gurjiv, 17.

Both brothers, who were the rear passengers in the Fiat Uno, were not wearing seat belts at the time.

Dilveer, then a final-year polytechnic student, and the front-seat passenger Mr Jaspaul Singh, a close family friend and cousin of the two brothers, survived the accident.

The court heard that he had had two cans of beer before the accident.

The two brothers, who were flung out of the car on impact, died of multiple injuries between one and three hours later at Changi General Hospital.

Gill was on police bail when he left for Canada in September 2003. He was placed on the police wanted list.

He was arrested at Changi Airport when he returned four years later and subsequently charged with the offences.

He also admitted to remaining in Canada for more than four years without having a valid exit permit.

Three other charges will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced on June 5.
