NTUC FairPrice on Friday dropped the prices on some of its housebrand rice.

Prices on eight of its best-selling housebrands for the staple grain have been shaved by between 5 per cent and 12 per cent. The price of a 5kg bag of Golden Royal Dragon Mixed Thai Hom Mali rice, for example, now costs $9.40, down from $9.90.

Consumers started buying the cheaper housebrands when the prices of some premium brands jumped by about 40 per cent in the last two months on the back of high global demand and failed crops.

NTUC FairPrice has seen the sale of its housebrands for rice jump 40 per cent over the period.

Consumers welcomed the drop in prices, but said it was a small comfort.
