3 VWOs appointed centres of specialisation

The Straits Times

THREE new Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) have been appointed Centres of Specialisation by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS).

The centres will conduct research in their specialised fields and provide advice to other VWOs in that area.

The three are the Centre for Promoting Alternatives to Violence, Singapore Children's Society and HCA Hospice Care.

Four other VWOs - the Alzheimer's Disease Association, the Presbyterian Community Services, Student Care Services, the TSAO Foundation - were appointed last fiscal year.

NCSS president RADM (ret) Kwek Siew Jin first mooted the concept for the Centres of Specialisation in 2006.

He hopes such centres would place emphasis on research into standards and methods and build a body of knowledge and specilisation in the sector.
