YOU could call it the second coming. Salsa, which first hit Singapore in the late 1990s, is back and bigger than before.
Enthusiasts say while there were only about 50 salsa regulars 10 years ago, there are now more than 400 who pound the floors of dance studios and dance clubs.
Dance studios Life! spoke to report that the number of students enrolling for salsa classes increased by 10 to 30 per cent over last year.
Gary Foo, 25, artistic director of En Motion Dance Studio in Tanjong Pagar, notes that his studio now has more than 100 students learning salsa each week, a 30 per cent jump from last year.
Meanwhile, the number of students for tango and bachata classes has remained the same.
The past five years have also seen more venues for salsa dancing. Xenbar in Chinatown and Union Square in Tanjong Pagar are clubs devoted exclusively to salsa music and dance, while other clubs such as Thumper in Goodwood Park Hotel offer occasional salsa nights.
