"Seeking Shangri-La" win hearts of many at SGF

A local designer took home the People's Choice Award at the Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) today.

28-year-old Peter Cheok's Fantasy Garden "Seeking Shangri-La" won some 49 per cent of visitors' votes, said a news release by the National Parks Board (NParks).

Visitors were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite garden through SMS over the eight-day event.

Mr Cheok said, "We hope that the visitors will feel inspired by our design, and hope that they will be more aware of the environmental issues facing us today."

The concept of Seeking Shangri-La is a permanent happyland, isolated from the rest of this mundane world and a place where all inhabitants lived life in tranquil wonder.

He added, "We went to Malaysia to source for the plants and for inspiration.. the team went to Pulau Pisang for snorkeling to see what an underwater world looks like."

The design of Seeking Shangri-La consists of "highland-look-a-like plants", like sedums, cactus, and sarracenia, which were sourced from Malaysia.

Prior to this award, the 28-year-old also won the Gold and Best of Show Awards, which were presented by an international panel of judges.

Organised by the NParks the second SGF concluded on August 1 with record numbers of over 300,000 visitors. About 30 per cent of the visitors came from overseas countries such as Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

The show featured 18 show gardens and 14 floral displays by 35 designers from 17 countries, and some 40 orchid displays.

The next SGF will be held in 2010.
