The big river light-up

THE Singapore River was awash in light on Friday, bringing to life the first of the Government's plans to transform the country's night-time look.

Pyrotechnics, music and a carnival accompanied the unveiling of hundreds of lights along the waterway's banks.

Friday's big light-up marked the end of the first phase of a Singapore River makeover announced in March.

Launched today by Mr Lim Hng Kiang, Minister of Trade and Industry, the inaugural Singapore River Festival goes into full swing from 19 to 28 September. This is part of the Singapore GP Season, a lifestyle festival of events supporting the landmark Formula One night race.

'The lighting enhancements not only highlight the unique architectural features of the river by night but also improve the river experience for diners and partygoers. The Singapore River Festival is the first such event to leverage the strengths of sub-precincts like Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Empress Place' said Minister Lim Hng Kiang

The completed phase one light enhancements includes the installation of new LED lighting systems along the Cavenagh and Read Bridges.

One of the highlights are "jellyfish" lights or underwater lights, found along Empress Place, providing colour and highlighting the fluid movements of the water. Even the characteristic granite river walls along the river and the Raffles Landing Jetty have been subtly lit to highlight the rich textures which contrast with the lush trees lining the river promenade.

'The Singapore River is home to some of Singapore's key heritage sites and iconic landmarks... With the enhancement works well in progress and the launch of the Singapore River Festival, the STB will be working on other fronts to introduce new unique events at various river sub-precincts. Together with the private sector, we will also catalyse and introduce new river experiences to enhance Singapore's entertainment options,' said Mr Lim Neo Chian, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of the Singapore Tourism Board.
