Fire at Tampines shophouse

A FIRE broke out in a hardware shophouse in Block 513, Tampines Central 1 on Friday morning. No one was reported in the 6.20 am blaze.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) put out the fire in 15 minutes, preventing it from spreading to the nearby pawnshop and MacDonalds fast food outlet.

The SCDF said in a media release that "SCDF immediately dispatched 2 fire engines, 1 Red Rhino, 2 Fire Bikes and 2 support vehicles to the incident location. SCDF crew entered the locked premises donning breathing apparatus and by cutting the front and rear shutters using power saw. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. The fire fighting efforts helped to prevent its spread to the neighbouring units (MacDonald's #01-150 and Pawn shop #01-154)

"There was no report of any casualties and there was no evacuation conducted. Investigation into the cause of fire is ongoing."

Stomper Lim Yaohu caught the fire fighters in action.

He said in an email sent on Oct 17, "There was a fire at Tampines Bus Interchange McDonald's this morning and I took some photos of the firemen at work.

"Smoke was coming out from the roof and fire seems to be spreading to the shops next to it. All shops along the stretch were cornered off by the police due to the smoke and heat generated by the fire."

Another Stomper Wong had thought it had started at the CPF building, and sent STOMP a picture of the incident taken from his window.

"I had just woken up, and heard the sirens of the fire engines. I went to take a look from my home, which is just facing the area, and that there was a fire," he said.
