Cyclists threaten to beat pedestrian

Syahidah and her sister were walking along a pedestrian walkway at Teban Gardens Road when two cyclists cut their path and one of them even threatened to beat them up.

In an e-mail to STOMP, she stated that "cycling on a walkway" is very dangerous and the problem is "persistent in the estate" that she stays at.

"Every single day without fail, there would be at least three cyclists in my way," she added.

She told STOMP that she had "tolerated this for a very long time" but the incident was the last straw.

"Not only was the cyclist annoying me and endangering my life, they also threatened to beat me and my brother up," she said.

The two sisters had just alighted from a bus and the brother was waiting for them at the bus stop with an umbrella since it was raining. They walked along a pedestrian path to the traffic lights five minutes away.

Two cyclists started ringing their bells as they were walking. Syahidah said, "My sister and I did not give way as that mean we would have to walk on the grass or in the drain."

"I couldn't understand why they could not cycle on the grass and overtake us."

The two sisters were then waiting for the traffic lights when one of the cyclists started ringing his bell.

"The ringing annoyed me so I told him to wait for the light. He was enraged and threatened to beat us up. He even called us stupid."

According to STOMP, the cyclist's friend apologised but the verbal assault still continued.

"When we finally crossed the road, he trailed us while still continuing to threaten us," Syahidah said.

"We ignored him and continued walking but he followed us to our lift landing. He continually threatening us and cursing us in Chinese," she added.

Syahidah then told the cyclist that it was illegal to cycle on a pedestrian walkway but "he ignored it".

"He simply brushed me off and said I was insane."

She also recalled one incident where she was at a bus stop when a cyclist ran over her feet.

"When I chided him, he said I was in his way! This is absurd!"

The Traffic Police has said that it is illegal for cyclsts to cycle on pavements and any offender will be fined $20.
