By S. Radha (Ms), Press Secretary to Minister for Law
I REFER to yesterday's article, 'Get real, accept foreigners, says law minister'.
Two points need to be clarified.
It was reported that Mr K. Shanmugam said 'get real and get practical' in respect of the foreign worker dormitories in Serangoon Gardens.
That is incorrect.
A resident questioned the need for foreign workers in Singapore and suggested that they affected Singaporeans' prospects. Mr Shanmugam responded by emphasising that Singaporeans' interests must always be the predominant consideration on any policy issue.
He also explained why it was in our vital interests to have guest workers and expatriates. The quoted comments were made as part of that answer. There were a number of exchanges with the resident and the resident made an incidental comment about Serangoon Gardens but there was neither a question nor an answer on the Serangoon Gardens issue.
