AN EXCITED crowd of about 100 patrons rushed into the new Choa Chu Kang public library when it reopened today at 11am where people gathered as early as an hour before it was opened.
Located on the fourth-storey of Lot One Shopper's Mall, it is 2,394 sq m, 38 per cent bigger than the old branch which was situated just a level below in the same building.
The new library boasts 190,000 books, 390 magazine titles and 10 newspaper titles, a collection which the National Library Board (NLB) hopes to grow to 210,000 by the first quarter of next year.
Dr N Varaprasad, Chief Executive, NLB said, "Moving with the times, our Public Libraries today have adopted a lifestyle-oriented approach in delivering its service to its core target audience, both in terms of its collections as well as the interior of the library itself.
"We have enhanced the collections at the new Choa Chu Kang Public Library and want to bring to the residents, an exceptional library that they can call their own given the distinct showcase of Choa Chu Kang heritage that is embedded in the design."
Open since 1997, the Choa Chu Kang library generates an average of 1.3 million loans per year.
