THIS shocking accident involving a six-vehicle pile-up happened along the Pan Island Expressway's (PIE) Eunos flyover towards Tuas, at about 10pm on Sunday.
According to Shin Min Daily News, one driver braked suddenly, which led to the cars behind colliding into each other. One of them, a red TransCab taxi, collided with an orange vehicle and skidded, landing horizontally in the middle of the lane.
Another black vehicle, unable to stop in time, then charged into the tail of the cab. The impact was so great that the front portion of the car went under the cab's back wheels and lifted it.
Two women passengers were in the cab at the time.
The driver of the black vehicle escaped with minor injuries because he had time to lower his driver's seat into a reclining position to avoid being crushed, according to Shin Min.
However, his car suffered serious damage, with a shattered windscreen and a crushed bonnet. Upon arrival, police closed off three lanes on the PIE to carry out rescue operations for the two female passengers in the cab. Even though they re-opened the road after the rescue was completed, the pile-up led to a prolonged traffic jam as curious drivers slowed down.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that seven people were hurt: five were drivers and two were the trapped women passengers. They were all conveyed to Changi General Hospital by ambulance.
