One S'porean dies in Bangkok fire

BANGKOK - A Singapore national was among at least 58 people killed Thursday when a fire ripped through an upscale Bangkok nightclub as revellers brought in the New Year, police said.

The fire gutted the popular Santika club in the Thai capital's Ekkamai district in the early hours of the morning after a pyrotechnic display.

"At present there is one foreigner confirmed dead - a Singaporean. We do not know if that person was male or female," said Police Lieutenant Colonel Viboon Thinwattanakul of the local police station.

At least 200 people were also injured in the blaze.
