National Library launches delivery service

A special home delivery service for physically challenged library members was launched by the National Library Board (NLB) today.

This service, named Project Deliver Me, engages a group of volunteer cabbies - the CabbyCare Charity Group - to select and deliver library materials to the doorsteps of homebound people who are unable to visit the library because of an illness or a disability.

The next three delivery dates scheduled for this year are: Jan 24, Apr 4 and June 13.

Beneficiaries of Project Deliver Me must be registered members of organisations that serve the physically-challenged.

The response has been positive so far. A total of 53 recipients have signed up for the service since the start of the trial in June 2007 and 145 home visits were conducted over the past year.

"Our Public Libraries have evolved over the years to stay relevant in meeting the learning needs of Singaporeans, including the under-served.

"We strongly believe that everyone has the right of access to library materials," said Dr N. Varaprasad, Chief Executive of NLB.

Fifty-three year old Cabbycare cabby Sim Soon Tech, who participated in the trial and is also a book lover said: "Having the books delivered to the beneficiaries will definitely encourage them to read.

"I don't mind sacrificing my time off the roads if I can spread the love of reading."
