Bulk of pedestrians killed jaywalkers
Wed, May 13, 2009
my paper

JAYWALKING has claimed the lives of seven people in the first quarter this year.

They were among 10 pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents between January and March, said Traffic Police.

Last year, more than two in three pedestrians killed were jaywalkers.

Law enforcers issued about 7,000 summonses for jaywalking last year and 1,500 in the first quarter of this year.

To educate the public on the dangers of jaywalking, the Traffic Police have been holding regular road safety talks and exhibitions.

Pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crossings while motorists are advised to remain alert and look out for pedestrians, a spokesman said.

If caught, jaywalkers are fined $20. They can be fined up to $1,000 or imprisoned up to three months when convicted in court.

Subsequent offenders face a fine of up to $2,000 or a jail term of up to six months.
