A mother-and-daughter pair were badly injured in the Genting bus crash on Tuesday afternoon, reported Lianhe Wanbao.
Mdm Chuah Siew Ngoh, 44, lost at least six of her teeth. Her 20-year-old daughter, Ms Toh Sin Yin, a National University of Singapore student, required stitches for an injured right eye.
Ms Toh was in the bus with her mother, an 11-year-old sister and a maid, said Mdm Meng, a relative. The mother was sitting together with her younger daughter.
"When the accident happened, the mother was likely protecting her 11-year-old daughter, so the daughter's injuries were light," said the relative. The mother, however, lost at least six teeth and her mouth was so badly swollen that it affected her breathing, said Mdm Meng.
As for Ms Toh, she was admitted to a Malaysia hospital but doctors there delayed giving Ms Toh the necessary stitches, said Mdm Meng. As a result, Ms Toh's family arranged for their insurance company to send her and her mother by ambulance back to Singapore for treatment.
Mother and daughter reached Singapore early in the morning today, and Ms Toh was rushed into the emergency room for stitches upon arrival. Later, the daughter was observed to have a swollen face and an injured right eye; the mother's right eye was covered by a bandage, and she had a swollen mouth and appeared to have lost many teeth from both jaws.
The accident happened at 330pm yesterday, when a bus carrying 22 Singaporeans suffered faulty brakes five minutes after leaving Genting for Singapore.
In a bid to stop the bus as it descended the highlands, the driver crashed the bus into the road divider. After hitting the divider, the bus ran into a tree before flipping over and coming to a stop.
Apart from Ms Toh and Mdm Chuah, other Singaporeans who were seriously injured include two 13-year-old girls, said the Wanbao report.
One of the girls received 16 stitches on her head in Malaysia and has since returned to Singapore. She is currently recovering at KK Women's and Children's Hospital.
Her mother, Mdm Tan, 45, said she was sitting with her daughter - one in front of the other - in the single seats on the left side of the bus.
"When the accident happened, the strong impact threw my daughter and I out of our seats and we landed on the right side of the bus. My daughter's head was crushed by a seat and she was bleeding heavily," said Mdm Tan.
"It was very scary. I immediately took out a towel and pressed it against her head to stop the bleeding, until someone carried her out of the bus," said Mdm Tan, who escaped unhurt from the accident.
The other 13-year-old girl fractured an arm, damaged her lymphatic system and suffered bleeding in her liver. She lost consciousness after the accident and is currently being treated in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
