my paper

I REFER to a report in the press that the Sultan of Johor has rejected a proposal for a third bridge between Singapore and Malaysia.

Singaporeans are glad to learn that Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is determined to improve relations with Singapore.

As he has taken over the helm in Malaysia, among his urgent tasks are the need to consolidate his power within Umno and gain global recognition by building good rapport and cooperating with regional and international communities.

Above all, the most important task for him would be to secure foreign investment for Malaysia.

The Sultan of Johor has said that he would exercise his royal right to reject the federal government's proposal for a third bridge.

Datuk Seri Najib's handling of the situation will be viewed with interest.

How he exercises his political wisdom and influence to convince the ground and the central committee of Umno about the value of his long-term economic plans and agendas is critical in determining the success of his administration.

It will also decide the direction to be taken in Malaysia's relations with Singapore.

Projects undertaken by the two countries would bring long-term benefits, prosperity and security to both countries and to Asean.
