WE THANK Mr Raymund Koh Joo Guan for his letter, ?Recycle rainwater collected from HDB rooftops? (my paper, July 6).
We share the writer?s view that water conservation is important.
The Housing Board has embarked on efforts to support this.
HDB is carrying out a pilot project to harvest rainwater for non-potable use in its eco-precinct, Treelodge@Punggol, which is under construction.
On top of that, HDB is also looking into adopting Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters Design features in its on-going Punggol Waterway project.
Rainwater will be retained and cleansed by natural elements such as plants before flowing into the waterway, which is part of Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs.
HDB will continue to explore more water-conservation features in its projects, including extending the rainwater-harvesting model in Treelodge @Punggol to other projects, if the outcome is favourable.
PUB is also increasing Singapore?s catchment areas for large-scale rainwater collection. Presently, rain falling on our water-catchment areas is channelled to 15 reservoirs.
By 2011, another two reservoirs will be completed and two thirds of Singapore?s land area will be used to collect rainwater. -Dr Johnny Wong
