Ramps considered for overhead bridges

my paper

WE THANK Mr Chin Kee Thou for his positive feedback on the upgrading work at the pedestrian overhead bridge between Blocks 236 and 211 in Toa Payoh in his letter, "Replace bridges with underpasses" (my paper, June 29).

In his letter, Mr Chin also suggested that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) consider building more underpasses to cater to our ageing population.

We would like to assure him that LTA is mindful of the need to cater to the diverse needs of our commuting public.

Thus, as far as possible, we will upgrade pedestrian overhead bridges to provide shelter so as to make the journey a more pleasant one.

As for underpasses, we would like to highlight that these are usually provided where they serve as access to underground structures, such as underground train stations or basement shops.

It is also generally more costly to build and maintain underpasses, compared to overhead bridges.

LTA will continue to explore other measures that will enhance the accessibility of road facilities for all pedestrians, including the less mobile.

Where space permits, we will also consider providing ramps for pedestrian overhead bridges.

We thank Mr Chin for the opportunity to clarify the matter and welcome him to call us on 1800-CALLLTA (1800-225-5582) or send an e-mail message to us at feedback@lta.gov.sg should he have other feedback or suggestions. - Ms Helen Lim Deputy Director Media Relations Land Transport Authority
