An agreement to formalise existing interactions and promote new areas of cooperation was signed between the defence ministries of Singapore and Vietnam today.

The Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) was inked Monday afternoon at the Vietnam Ministry of National Defence by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean and Vietnam's Minister of National Defence General (GEN) Phung Quang Thanh.

"The signing of the DCA at the ministerial level marks a significant milestone in the warm and growing defence relationship between both countries, and reflects their commitment towards enhancing bilateral defence ties through closer defence cooperation", Singapore's Ministry of Defence said in a news release.

Before the signing, DPM Teo also called on GEN Thanh to discuss bilateral defence cooperation, regional security developments and the regional security architecture.

DPM Teo is in Vietnam for an official visit from September 7 to 10.

During his trip, he will call on Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, and Chairman of Commission of Inspection Nguyen Van Chi.

He will also deliver a speech at the National Defence College of the Ministry of National Defence, and visit the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) units and historic battle sites at Dien Bien Phu,
