20 to 30 workers cycling to avoid traffic jam at Causeway
Mon, Oct 26, 2009
The Star/Asia News Network

Nanyang Siang Pau also reported that a group of 20 to 30 workers have been cycling from Johor Baru to Singapore to avoid being caught up in a traffic jam at the Causeway.

Prior to this, only four to five people had been cycling across the Causeway to enter Singapore.

Since terrorist suspect Mat Selamat escaped from the Singapore prison, the authorities have imposed more stringent checks at the checkpoint, resulting in a longer waiting time for clearance for those entering the Island Republic in the morning and after office hours.

It is estimated that about 100,000 people cross the Causeway everyday in cars, motorcycles, buses or taxis.

The group will cycle from the new Immigration checkpoint to cross the Causeway.

P. Y. Chow, who is working as a clerk in a logistic company located at Woodlands, about 10 minutes away from the Customs checkpoint, said ?cycling is faster than driving, healthier and cheaper, too.??
