S'poreans see profits in Perak SMEs
Tue, Nov 24, 2009
New Straits Times

The Singapore Manufacturers Association (SMA) wants to help turn cottage industry in Perak into a boutique industry.

Its chairman, Renny Yeo, said: "There is much opportunity here, especially in the shoe-making industry.

"We are interested in helping them carry out a re-branding exercise, and turn it into a boutique industry.

"Coupled with proper marketing, they stand to make much more profit than what they are making now," he said after attending an exhibition showcasing products manufactured by small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) here yesterday.

He said the more than 400 shoe manufacturers in the Kinta Valley, for instance, stood to benefit from such a move.

"With the formation of a joint consultative council comprising the Perak branch of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers and the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce I am sure this goal can be achieved."

He is among 20 SMA members on an inaugural three-day business mission here.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said at the function that he had reminded heads of government departments and agencies to reduce red tape and delays.

"In line with the state government's policy of promoting local industries and expanding the economy, we must continue with our business-friendly policies."

He said local SMEs must learn from their Singaporean counterparts if they wished to prosper.
