LOS ANGELES - AROUND 100 people, including 75 students, have been arrested as part of a drug probe at San Diego State University (SDSU) targeting campus dealers and users, authorities said on Tuesday.

Justice officials said drugs, weapons and cash had been seized in the raids, the culmination of an investigation that was triggered by the cocaine overdose death of a female student in May last year.

Authorities said around two kilos of cocaine, 23kg of marijuana and some 350 ecstasy pills were seized during the probe, as well as around US$60,000 (S$81,000) in cash and several firearms.

The San Diego District Attorney's Office said hashish oil, methamphetamine, psychedelic mushdooms and illicit prescription drugs were also seized.

'SDSU will continue to do what is necessary, through both enforcement and education, to encourage our students to make the responsible choices to ensure the health and safety of our campus community,' University President Stephen Weber said in a prepared statement.

During the undercover operation, Drug Enforcement Administration agents infiltrated several college fraternity houses where they purchased drugs from student dealers.

One alleged dealer was a masters student in homeland security while another caught in the probe was a criminal justice major, officials said.
