LONDON - PRIME Minister Gordon Brown's wife Sarah conceded in an interview on Monday that she 'didn't stand a chance' when French first lady Carla Bruni visited Britain with her husband in March.

Speaking to The Times newspaper, the former public relations executive shrugged off the suggestion that she was under pressure to dress up to meet with the former Italian supermodel.

'Well, I didn't stand a chance, did I?' Mrs Sarah Brown told the daily.

'I mean, I was standing next to a supermodel. I thought that whatever I wore didn't matter. With all due respect to myself, I knew that day I couldn't win.'

Ms Bruni charmed the British public, and graced the front page of several newspapers during the state visit, with one newspaper carrying an article headlined: 'Crazy for Carla: How Britian went mad for France's First Lady'. -- AFP
