SYDNEY - A STRONG earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the Solomon Islands on Tuesday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The undersea quake struck at 8.40am (5.40am Singapore time) 133 kilometres east of Kira Kira, which is on San Cristobal island, and 371 kilometres east-southeast of the capital Honiara, the US Geological Survey said.

It occurred at a depth of 52 kilometres, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue an alert for the region.
