Bruni dreams of children with her presidential spouse

NEW YORK - FRENCH President Nicolas Sarkozy's pop star wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy would like to have children with her new husband, she said in an interview with a United States magazine released Monday.

'I'd love to have children with Nicolas. I hope to, if I am young enough. It would be a dream,' Bruni told Vanity Fair.

But the 40-year-old former model is not ready to try out fertility programmes to make it happen, according to the magazine.

'If it comes, I'd be the happiest person in the world, but if it doesn't come, I'm not going to tempt the Devil,' she said. 'If life doesn't give me another child, well, it has given me so much already.'

Bruni, who married Sarkozy in February after a whirlwind three-month romance, said she relishes her new role as the wife of the head of state.

'It's unbelievable. I was Italian - how can I be the first lady of France?' she said.

Bruni said she is on friendly terms with Mr Sarkozy's first wife but relations are still awkward with his second wife, Cecilia, which she said was understandable.

'I would be delighted to meet and have lunch with Cecilia, but I think she is not ready, and Nicolas is not. They are still burned by their love which proves they had a very strong love.' Bruni described her courtship with the president, saying Mr Sarkozy was keen to tie the knot from the outset.

'That is very rare to get in a man. I was already 39 when I met him. I already had my son. So the normal situation would be to date slowly but he's not a slow man.'

'He said, 'I'm completely in love with you, and I'd really love to marry you'.'

Bruni said she not fully anticipate the effect that her union with Mr Sarkozy would have, only a month after he divorced.

'My mistake is that I fell madly in love and did not take the measure of how enormous this was going to be.'

She said she had to warn Mr Sarkozy about numerous nude photos taken during her days as a top model - but he was unconcerned.

'I took him and said, 'OK, now I need to show you, because I posed in the nude ... you must know that this is going to come out.' He said, 'Oh, I like this one! Can I have a print of it?''

Bruni also said she views the late Jackie Onassis, wife of slain US president John F. Kennedy, as a more suitable role model for her than the more conservative wife of former French president Charles de Gaulle. -- AFP
