Strong quake hits Russia

MOSCOW - A STRONG 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the southern part of Russia's Lake Baikal on Wednesday, causing brief power and phone outages in the nearby city of Irkutsk according to RIA news agency.

No casualties or serious damage were reported.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said it measured the quake at 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale and that it struck 64km south of Irkutsk at a depth of 10km.

The local Russian seismologial centre measured the quake at 6.0 on the Richter scale, adding that moderate tremors of up to 5.0 magnitude were felt in Irkutsk. -- AFP
