SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - An Australian doctor was Wednesday charged with 17 offences against his female patients, including genital mutilation and sexual assault, police said.

Police began investigating Graeme Reeves in February when more than 100 complaints of patient misconduct emerged after several women publicly accused him of the offences between 2001 and 2003.

The 58-year-old was arrested in western Sydney early Wednesday and charged with nine counts of aggravated sexual assault, six counts of indecent assault, one count of female genital mutilation and one count of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm.

"Today's charges relate to reports submitted to police by 10 people, and are a testament of the courage demonstrated by these women who have bravely come forward to report such traumatic events," Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec said.

Reeves appeared in court Wednesday and was refused bail.
