ROME, ITALY - A terminally ill Italian woman awoke from a coma so she could fulfill her last wish of marrying her partner before she died, La Repubblica reported Wednesday.

Giovanna, a woman in her fifties suffering from an incurable strain of hepatitis, asked her family and doctors in July "to be woken" from her artificial coma so she could marry her partner Enzo, the newspaper said.

Despite "bureaucratic difficulties," the marriage took place Sunday in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Padua, northern Italy.

The guests -- the couple's son, two witnesses and a representative from the town hall -- had to wear sterilized clothes and masks.

Despite the "tiredness and pain," Giovanna was able to say "yes" to her wedding vows before immediately falling back into a coma, the report said.

"Her last wish has finally come true. It's a dream, an experience that will belong just to us and no one else," her husband Enzo said.

One doctor was quoted as saying that the woman had only a few weeks to live.
