Former Serbian President Milan Milutinovic, on trial in The Hague on war crimes charges, has returned temporarily to Serbia for a medical procedure, the U.N. war crimes tribunal said on Wednesday.

"Milutinovic's temporary release is subject to a number of strict conditions, including 24-hour electronic surveillance of the accused by Serbian authorities," the court said in a statement.

He will be in Serbia until October 2, the court added.

Milutinovic succeeded Slobodan Milosevic as Serb president in 1997 and served until 2002. He went on trial in 2006, along with five others, on charges of the forcible deportation of some 800,000 Kosovo Albanians and other non Serbs and the murder of hundreds of civilians by Serb forces in Kosovo in 1999.

He and his co-defendants pleaded not guilty and lawyers delivered closing arguments in the trial last month.
