CIUDAD JUAREZ (Mexico) - POLICE in northern Mexico were delivered a cooler containing the heads of four men, local authorities said late on Monday.

A messenger service made the grisly delivery to a municipal police station in Ascension, a town near the violence-wracked city of Ciudad Juarez, which is close to the US border.

The container was marked 'sensitive', and police first believed the shipment was meant to be delivered to a hospital, the state attorney's office said.

Police were investigating whether any of the heads, believed to belong to men between the ages of 25 and 35, could be identified as belonging to any of the 10 local residents who were kidnapped last week by gunmen.

Ciudad Juarez is reputed to be the most dangerous city in the country, with more than 1,000 of the 3,800 drug-linked killings taking place there since the start of the year, according to press reports. -- AFP
