Quake strikes off Tonga

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND - A 5.7-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck off the main Pacific island nation of Tonga on Thursday, seismologists said.

The quake hit at 8.38am (4.38am Singapore time) 475 kilometres west-southwest of the capital Nuku'Alofa, the US Geological Survey said.

It was registered at a depth of 581 kilometres.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued. -- AFP
