Russian president sees Obama flexible on missile defense

LIMA, Peru - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Sunday he believed US president-elect Barack Obama would be open to changing position over a hotly contested US plan for a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe.

"They don't have a once and for all prepared template for solving this problem," Medvedev told reporters in Peru where he attended an Asia-Pacific summit.

"It means dialogue is possible," he said. "A change of position if possible."

Russia has fiercely opposed US plans to build a missile shield in former Soviet bloc states Poland and the Czech Republic and says the outgoing administration of George W. Bush failed to ease its concerns in Lima.

An Obama adviser earlier said the president-elect has made no commitment on whether the missile defense shield would go ahead.

The adviser spoke after Polish President Lech Kaczynski said that Obama assured him in a telephone conversation that he would go ahead with plans to build the shield.

The United States says the shield is meant to protect from states such as Iran, but Russia sees it as an encroachment.
