LONDON - HUNDREDS of people gathered in the heart of London's business community on Wednesday to honour those who died in last week's attacks in India's economic capital Mumbai.

A candlelit vigil was held as commuters left work at Canary Wharf in the east of the British capital, while another was planned in the City of London financial district later, said the organisers, Indian charity SewaVolunteers.

Among the crowd was London-based businessman Hiro Harjani, whose nephew Mohit Harjani was killed in the attacks on the Oberoi/Trident hotel. He had been having dinner with his wife Lavina while in Mumbai visiting relatives.

'We need solidarity. We need to get together like this. I'm going to support every event,' Mr Hiro Harjani said.

'We need answers. We need the global community to be aware and to take more action. This is not just an India and Pakistan problem, it's a world problem.'

Also at the ceremony was Mr Anwar Hasan, a representative of Tata Group, which runs the Taj Mahal hotel that was also targeted during the violence.

'In the 60 hours that the terrorist attacks lasted in India, I watched each and every minute of it on television,' he said.

Asked why he was attending the vigil, he said: 'Not being in India, I felt I had to be part of something happening collectively.'

Ten gunmen armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades mounted an assault on Mumbai last week that killed 188 people, including 22 foreigners, and injured more than 300.
