LONDON - Britain said it was "deeply saddened" and Prime Minister Gordon Brown sent his condolences after the death of Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's wife in a car crash Friday.
Susan Tsvangirai was killed when the car she and her husband were in was hit by a freight truck as they headed to their hometown in Buhera district. He was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.
"We are deeply saddened to hear news of Susan Tsvangirai's death and we offer our condolences," a Foreign Office spokeswoman said. "We are monitoring the situation closely."
A spokesman for Brown's Downing Street office added: "The prime minister has sent his condolences to Morgan Tsvangirai."
Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement For Democratic Change opposition party, joined a unity government with veteran President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF three weeks ago as prime minister.
He had beaten Mugabe into second place in a first-round presidential election last March but pulled out of a later run-off after scores of his supporters were killed.
He only agreed to enter the unity government after months of wrangling. Britain, the former colonial power in Zimbabwe, has been strongly critical of Mugabe?s rule.
