ISTANBUL, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Eight people died as a result of a fire at a hospital in the northwestern Turkish city of Bursa, the provincial governor said on Tuesday.

The fire broke out overnight due to an electrical fault in the hospital's scanner department but was quickly put out, Bursa Governor Sahabettin Harput said in comments broadcast on the CNN Turk channel.

Smoke from the blaze spread to the intensive care unit but Harput said it was not clear whether the eight victims, three of them female, had died from smoke inhalation or from a power cut to their life support systems that followed the fire.

Forty-four people were evacuated from the Sevket Yilmaz state hospital and sent for treatment at 10 other hospitals as a result of the fire but there was no risk to other patients in the hospital, he said.
