Fire shuts nuclear power station in Britain

LONDON, UK - A nuclear power plant in southeast England was shut down Tuesday after a small fire in the boiler annexe, the company that runs the complex said.

Firefighters had extinguished the fire at the Dungeness B plant at Romney Marsh in Kent after staff raised the alarm shortly before midnight on Monday, a fire official said.

"There was no risk to the public and there was no release of radioactive material," a British Energy spokesman said.

No one was injured and an investigation is underway into the cause of the fire which was extinguished by 2 am on Tuesday, a fire official said.

The station has two reactor units, one of which was already offline for maintenance at the time of the fire.

Currently the plant is not producing power for Britain's national grid, but when both reactors are working they can produce enough power for 1.5 million customers, reports said.
