PORT-AU-PRINCE - Some 300 injured Haitians receiving treatment aboard a US Navy ship following last month's earthquake will be moved back to their country, allowing other patients to take their place, US officials said Monday.
The injured quake survivors will be moved "in the coming days" from the USNS Comfort, anchored just offshore, to a school called "Love A Child Village" - supported by a US Christian organization - north of Port-au-Prince, the US government's Joint Information Center (JIC) said in a statement.
"The movement of post-operative patients to this facility opens space for Haitians still in need of urgent care," JIC said.
The school, transformed into a recovery clinic in the wake of the devastating January 12 earthquake, currently houses over 200 patients and could be expanded to hold over 1,000.
Harry Mayer, a US liaison to the Pan American Health Organization, said the site was an example of relief groups "coming together that can sustain the work for the long haul."
The clinic includes medical teams from more than 10 nations, and JIC said the US government's contribution included a five-person team of a nurse, three paramedics and one emergency medical technician.
