WASHINGTON - French President Nicolas Sarkozy gave President Barack Obama the gift of an 18th century document accrediting Benjamin Franklin as ambassador to France, a French diplomatic source said Tuesday.
The US statesman and inventor presented the document when he became the first US ambassador to France from 1778-1785, the French diplomat said ahead of Sarkozy's visit to the White House.
The US president and his wife Michelle hosted Sarkozy and his wife, ex-supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, at a private White House dinner before the French couple flew back to Paris late Tuesday.
Sarkozy also gave Obama's daughters Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, a collection of Asterix comics.
The comic adventures of the diminutive Gaulish warrior and his friends that resist Roman occupation are popular in France, but largely unknown in the United States.
Obama and Sarkozy met for two hours earlier in the day and held a joint press conference.
