MEXICO CITY, Feb 13, 2011 (AFP) - Seven people were fatally shot early outside Mexico City early Sunday in the latest spasm of drug violence during an unusually bloody weekend, polices said.

The victims, six men and a woman, were shot as they exited a party by armed gunmen in the town of Chimalhuacan, a suburb of Mexico. The gunmen fired from a vehicle, then sped away, authorities said.

Another shooting victim survived the onslaught, and had been taken to the hospital for treatment, officials said.

The shooting came on the heels of a staggering surge in drug-related violent crime in Mexico rocking the cities of Monterrey and Guadalajara, and the northern state of Chihuahua, claiming at least 30 lives Saturday, police said.

Those killings included 11 dead in Chihuahua state and several murders in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's deadliest city.

Drug related crime in Mexico has killed more that 34,600 people since late 2006, when the government deployed some 50,000 troops in a major anti-drug trafficking offensive.
