A group of 40 seniors masquerading as beggars in South-east Asia has been arrested by police in Henan province, the Global Times reported yesterday.
The seniors, all around the age of 70, travelled to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand to beg from and scam locals in other ways, the paper reported, quoting local media.
The seniors each earned up to 20,000 yuan (S$4,000) a month, the Henan media said. Some feigned being hit by a car and demanded compensation from the driver.
Three young men organised overseas trips for the elderly in exchange for a commission. The police have detained two of them.
