A 49-YEAR-OLD man who had sex with a 15-year-old girl was jailed for 12 months on Monday.

Hoe Swee Thai, 49, pleaded guilty last month to having sex with a girl under 16 at his Woodlands flat on July 12, 2005.

The unemployed divorcee struck up a conversation with the victim and a 13-year-old girl at a void deck in Woodlands Street 41 the previous day after they had run away from their homes.

He invited the two girls to his home and offered them a place to shower and rest. He also gave them $10 for meals and told them to call him at 5pm. He also found out how old they were.

Later that day, the two girls called Hoe who asked them to wait for him at the void deck of his block. He later took them to his home. After a shower and a change of clothes, the two went out to meet friends.

On July 12, sometime past midnight, the two girls returned and slept on Hoe's bed while he slept on the floor.

When the victim told Hoe she could not sleep, he offered her $100 to have sex with him. The victim agreed.

Two days later, the victim made a police report that she had had sex with a man.

A second charge of attempted sex with the 13-year-old was taken into consideration.

Under the Women's Charter, Hoe, who has two grown-up children, could have been jailed for up to five years and fined up to $10,000.
