Anita Sarawak forgives robbers for attack

By Alang Bendahara

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Entertainer Anita Sarawak has forgiven the robbers who attacked and injured her husband Mahathir Abdullah in Taman Melawati on Friday.

"In the spirit of Ramadan, I forgive them for the sin they have committed," said Anita yesterday.

She is convinced the four men who attacked her husband outside her stepmother Datin Umi Kalthum's home were Malays.

"How could they disrespect the holy fasting month and commit such crime against a fellow Muslim?"

Anita said she had been up the whole night looking after her husband, whose head was slashed as he tried to fight off the robbers.

"I'm so thankful to God that Mahathir is alive and no serious harm was done. He is doing fine and resting at home. I also want to thank my fans, friends, family members and the media for their concern and good wishes."

Anita said she was unable to go to the police station to lodge a report, but she was contacted by the police a few hours after the incident.

Umi said she was not surprised by the robbery as Jalan H4 Taman Melawati where she lived was notorious for crime.

"I've been a victim of snatch theft twice this year. Some men grabbed my gold chain as I was doing chores outside the house," said Umi yesterday.

Her neighbour's home was burgled twice recently, she added.

Ampang police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Jalil Hassan said: "Although Anita could not come over, we managed to get details of the incident from several eyewitnesses."

In Friday's incident, Anita and Mahathir were waiting in their car in front of Umi's house when their driver alighted and went to open the door. Two men grabbed the driver.

Mahathir jumped out of the car to help, and was attacked by another two robbers. One slashed Mahathir's head with a meat cleaver. Anita remained in the locked car and shouted at the robbers who panicked and ran off.
