JOHOR - The Sultan of Johor unveiled his orange-coloured, custom-made Proton hatchback with the WWW 1 number plate at a mammoth gathering organised by non-governmental organisations and Johor Umno Youth on Sunday.
The event was held in the wake of criticisms over the successful bidding by Sultan Ibrahim Ismail for the WWW 1 car registration plate.
Parti Islam SeMalaysia leader Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin had raised a storm when he tweeted that the RM520,000 (S$210,000) bidding price could have been better used to meet the needs of the poor.
Defending his father, Crown Prince Ismail Idris tweeted that neither he nor his father had taken a cent from the government.
The Sultan was visibly touched by the support of more than 30,000 people who were at Istana Pasir Pelangi.
"I will never forget this historic moment and, from the bottom of my heart, I thank each and everyone of my subjects who came here," said the Sultan, as he unveiled the Proton Satria Neo.
