Drug pusher killed in shootout after refusing to surrender

IPOH - A man believed to be a drug pusher was shot to death after he lobbed a hand grenade at policemen and opened fire on them near the junction of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort in Bagan Serai near here.

Kerian police chief Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan said the 42-year-old man earlier sped off from his house in Kampung Dew in Simpang Empat, Semanggol, in a Honda Accord after realising the presence of police.

"The police team gave chase for about 25km before they managed to overtake the suspect's car near the junction.

"The suspect refused to surrender and instead, became aggressive and started shooting at the police," he said yesterday.

He added that in the 10.30am incident, the suspect also threw a hand grenade at a police highway patrol car involved in the chase but luckily, it did not explode.

Supt Mat Fauzi said the suspect died on the spot of gunshot wounds when the policemen returned fire.

Police found two pistols, several rounds of bullets, a knife and drugs in the suspect's car.

The grenade was later defused by a team from the bomb disposal unit of the state police contingent.

The suspect's body has been sent to the Parit Buntar Hospital.
